February
2012
With
cold weather solidly in place, it makes it hard to
imagine that spring is just around the corner.
Believe it or not spring will be here rapidly, so it
is time to prepare. Making plans for sprays of
annual flowers among shrubs and perennials, or
placements of pottery always puts me in the mood for
spring. February has seen more changes to plans
for me than any other month. This is my time for
analyzing the makeup and structure of the garden and
surrounding areas.
Most
people do not think of turf areas in the winter, but
this is the time to plan for problems areas in your
turf. If there is a crabgrass issue in your lawn
you should be thinking of pre-emergent fertilizer
applications towards the end of the month. These
applications will depend on the temperature of the
soil, but this can quite often occur in
February. Make plans for areas affected by
fungus last year, although now is not the time to
apply product to these spots it is a good
reminder. Trees can be trimmed back or thinned
to allow more sun into turf areas.
Vegetable
gardens also need consideration at this time of
year. Make sure any debris has been removed at
this time to help eliminate any pests that may be
residing in this material. If the weather warms
enough, you may consider tilling especially for
expanded areas. Don't forget to lay out the area
so that you can effectively rotate your crops to
different locations.
Spring
is near! Before long the crocus bulbs will be up
and blooming. Even before that you may find a
witch hazel in bloom. The fragrance from a witch
hazel will have you believing that spring is here even
if there is still snow on the ground.
